Excerpt from A King and a Pawn by Liv Olteano:

“Would you take me in as a trophy, Bert?” he asked, smiling oddly, a sort of indulgent look in his eyes.

I wasn’t going to outsmart him, that was for sure. Luckily I didn’t think I had to.

“I wouldn’t be taking you in at all. You and your kids would simply accompany me. I’m sure you can find something of value to offer me so I’ll be willing to go that way. And then you’d find something of value to offer Weiss and the Council to give you guys, say, political asylum?”

“You’ve thought of everything, haven’t you?”

I shrugged. “I’m sure you did. I don’t think you’re a fool, Will. I’m sure you’re not, in fact. So I’m giving you the courtesy of not treating you as one. A courtesy I hope you’ll give me too.”

“Implying that I have not so far?” he asked, stepping toward me again.

My pulse spiked. “I wasn’t implying that at all.”

We were face-to-face, a step apart at most. My mind stuttered over the few stray thoughts I managed to recognize. It was unusual someone’s presence would affect me this much, this soon. Was he that special? Was our chemistry that special? Or was he using some sort of spell on me? I didn’t think that was beneath him. Magic wasn’t beneath any magic-wielding fey, just like changing into a wolf wasn’t beneath me as werewolf. It was a natural part of who we were. I just wasn’t that used to his natural part, and the very idea made me smile.

“What could I offer you that you’d like to have?” he asked as his breath touched my face with every word he uttered.

“Oh, I could think of several things,” I replied.

He leaned toward me. His lips brushed against mine now when he spoke. “I could think of several things I’d like to offer you as well.”

I gulped. Shit, I couldn’t think with my dick. Not now at least. I so wanted to. It would be so easy to whisper it sweetly: “Fuck my brains out and I’ll be on your side.” But I wasn’t here for shits and giggles, so I couldn’t. There was no reason I couldn’t hope I’d get a fuck out of the situation somewhere down the line. The more time we spent together, the better chance of that happening. That was pretty solid motivation to spin things in a way that would benefit us all in the end. There. I wasn’t doing this for my selfish fuck-greedy self but for the greater good. I was a fucking humanitarian, feyitarian, whateveritarian.

“I’ll only ask for one small thing for myself,” I whispered softly.

He brushed his lips against mine. The touch sent little fiery thrills down my nerve endings, from the skin of my lips right to the pulsing muscle of my heart. I felt his breath hitch at the contact, and the idea it might affect him almost as much as it was affecting me sent a shiver down my spine. We could have been faking it, both of us. This was a negotiation of sorts, and now was the time to bring on our top game. But I felt it in my gut that this connection was real, that it wasn’t bullshit for either one of us. I just knew it in the pit of my stomach. I wondered if he knew it too, as clearly as I did right in that instant.

His scent didn’t assault my senses since he’d been hanging out in my personal space for a while now. My senses were bathed in his scent already. But I could feel the pounding of his heart as I deepened the kiss; I could feel his muscles clench and unwind with sensual tension while my body sang with it. Fuck me sideways, I wanted him right now. I wanted him so bad it almost gutted me. The feel of him languidly moving his tongue against mine made my blood turn into liquid fire, scalding my insides and bringing up my body temperature to heights I didn’t think I’d felt before after just kissing. Everything in my body screamed, This. This is it. This is what you’ve been waiting for, for so fucking long!

“What do you want?” he asked after he pulled back, his forehead leaning against mine.

Fuck, fuck it, fuck! “I want all the information you can get from the Archives on a certain topic.”

Liv Olteano is a voracious reader, music lover, and coffee addict extraordinaire. And occasional geek. Okay, more than occasional.

She believes stories are the best kind of magic there is. And life would be horrible without magic. Her hobbies include losing herself in the minds and souls of characters, giving up countless nights of sleep to get to know said characters, and trying to introduce them to the world. Sometimes they appreciate her efforts. The process would probably go quicker if they’d bring her a cup of coffee now and then when stopping by. Characters—what can you do, right?

Liv has a penchant for quirky stories and is a reverent lover of diversity. She can be found loitering around the Internet at odd hours and being generally awkward and goofy at all times.

Growing up, Kai Bennu was taunted for skin dark as midnight and his otherworldly appearance. They called him Nightmare, but Alec Vasilios, a wealthy and powerful businessman, wants to call Kai his own. Kai’s past has left him with little trust in others and even more reluctance to surrender himself to Alec’s power. With both men harboring supernatural secrets, finding common ground won’t come without sacrifice.

EXCERPT:

They never asked him his name. They ran from his shadow. He was alone. Always alone. He was Nightmare.

To me he was everything I wanted. To me, he was beautiful. I needed to run my fingers along his skin, to cherish him. In the heat of the blazing sun, I wanted to taste his sweat. I wanted him beneath me, a part of me, a part of my soul. He didn’t frighten me. He entranced me. He called to me.

AUTHOR INFORMATION

Author Bio:

Deja Black had fantasies of men loving men, men who felt strongly, loved hard, and needed a hero. Then one great day she came across a book and discovered the world of m/m writing, encountered others who shared her obsession as much as she did, and found a world where she could not only be accepted for the lives and loves she envisioned, but she could create them too. So why not? Why not take the stories she would write and throw away as a teenager, grow them, dream them, and make them a reality where she could know her own characters, let them live their story, and make them real for someone else? And she did. Now, with the support of her hubby and some intense time management, she is learning to balance her family of two energetic children and a very needy shitzu at home along with the many students she teaches each and every day with her passion of writing what she loves to read.

An Alisa Audiobook Review: Little Wolf (Beings in Love #4) by R. Cooper and Robert Nieman (Narrator)

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Little Wolf audiobookOn the run from his old-blood werewolf family, Tim Dirus finds himself in Wolf’s Paw, one of the last surviving refuges from the days when werewolves were hunted by humans and one of the last places Tim wants to be. Kept away from other wolves by his uncle, Tim knows almost nothing about his own kind except that alpha werewolves only want to control and dominate a scrawny wolf like him.

Tim isn’t in Wolf’s Paw an hour before he draws the attention of Sheriff Nathaniel Neri, the alphaest alpha in a town full of alphas. Powerful, intimidating, and the most beautiful wolf Tim has ever seen, Nathaniel makes Tim feel safe for reasons Tim doesn’t understand. For five years he’s lived on the run, in fear of his family and other wolves. Everything about Wolf’s Paw is contrary to what he thought he knew, and he is terrified. Fearing his mate will run, Sheriff Nathaniel must calm his little wolf and show him he’s more than a match for this big, bad alpha.

Tim has been running from his family for years, with the help of a friend he goes to Wolf’s Paw.  When he meets Nathaniel he does everything he can to push him away, but the sheriff is determined to keep Tim safe if not from others, but from himself.  They both slowly open up to the other, but both continue to misunderstand the other’s actions.

This was an interesting story.  As with other stories in the series the whole not being able to tell your mate who they are to you can get a bit aggravating.  Tim never learned about any of his instincts while being lock away at his uncle’s mansion and doesn’t know how to process and understand the feelings he is having. How they can take Tim pushing Nathaniel away when he doesn’t know as a rejection is hard to fathom.

Robert Nieman did a great job narrating this story.  He doesn’t change voices much when narrating, but this author’s style of writing didn’t need the break up between characters.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is perfect and follows the pattern for the series.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Wet Heat by R.D. Hero

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

WetHeat_600x900Lee Aung is an omega werewolf who refuses to follow tradition. Omegas are expected to mate with an alpha and produce children, which they would then nourish and cherish until the child is of age to move on. Homebodies, omegas are happiest when serving their alphas. Lee is far from that! In fact, at forty-two, he’s past the age of going into heat, so alphas would no longer be attracted to him. But he has a secret weapon—he uses Wet Heat, an experimental spray-on fragrance that simulates the scent of an omega in heat, thereby giving Lee all the hookups he can manage.

Too bad he’s lost his job, and the landlord wants to evict him, because now he can’t afford to buy Wet Heat. He knows how to scam free samples and does so, but he’s also participating in research conducted by the lab that makes Wet Heat, so he knows his supply is stable That is, until a bad week gets worse, and his research handler—geeky, introverted Cain—informs Lee that his lying and cheating is over. Cain has found out that, contrary to what Lee told him when he signed up for the program, he is not a mated omega, and his stories about his alpha have been nothing but lies.

But what Cain doesn’t tell Lee is that Cain is attracted to him even without the scent of Wet Heat. In fact, if half the stories Lee has related about sex with his fake alpha are based on truth, Cain is willing to put aside his own reticence to take an omega mate and pursue Lee instead. But Lee leads him on a merry chase, and it’s not quite so easy to land the omega as Cain thought. Interfering moms looking to get their children settled, a nephew who is experimenting with a dangerous version of Wet Heat, and a tough alpha scientist who will go to any length to get Lee’s nephew—even if it means getting Lee out of the way permanently—all contrive to keep Cain from Lee.

This is the first story I’ve read from this author, and I enjoyed it very much. It was humorous, with Lee making sometimes snarky commentary both directly and indirectly via parenthesis. The concept of the werewolf universe with alphas, betas, and omegas having certain roles was a new one and certainly believable. Both main and secondary characters were well developed, and the drama surrounding the distribution of the “bad batch” of Wet Heat was well done.

I’m looking forward to more from this author. I recommend this to those who enjoy paranormal stories in the werewolf universe, especially to those who like a little humor and mystery thrown in.

Cover art by L.C. Chase leads the eye to the right forefront of the cover where a dark blue perfume bottle is clearly marked with a wolf paw, and the shadow of a wolf takes up the left side background of the cover. Done in gray tones, with the blue bottle, it is very clean, attention-getting, and pertinent to the story.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have R. D. Hero here today to talk about Wet Heat, her latest release. Welcome, R. D.!
 WetHeat_TourBanner

Hello! I’m R.D. Hero, the author of Wet Heat, a book about werewolf menopause, nefarious alphas, and party-boy omegas. I’d like to thank the blogs hosting this tour. Follow along to read more about the world and characters of Wet Heat!

About Wet Heat

Most omega werewolves want a mate and pups, but Lee Aung prefers an unconventional party-boy lifestyle. Yet at forty-two, he’s stopped going into heat, which means he’s expired goods—no longer a fertile, young omega that alpha wolves drool over. So Lee uses Wet Heat, a synthetic pheromone, to reel in the alpha hookups.

After losing his job at the bank, Lee can’t afford to keep up his Wet Heat habit. His solution: scam free samples by pretending to be a happily mated test subject at Wet Heat headquarters. There, Lee spends two years being interviewed by the reserved alpha scientist, Cain, who at thirty-two is unmated and—up until this point—content with that.

Cain never really felt his alpha instincts, nor took part in the usual alpha/beta/omega social dynamics. But after discovering that Lee has been lying about his unmated status for two years, Cain finally admits that for the first time, he wants to court an omega. Unfortunately, he’s picked the one omega who doesn’t want to be courted.

About R. D. Hero

R.D. Hero bombed out of art school. After that, she admitted writing might be the best course of action, and hopped to it. She likes writing about people who shouldn’t fall in love, which she’s been doing for about eight years. Starting with online serial fiction, R.D. developed her favorite tropes and dynamics, writing what she wanted to read.

Aside from that, she loves spicy food, boxer dogs, camping, and photography.

A Paul B Review: Wolfsong by T.J. Klune

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

WolfsongI always anticipate the next TJ Klune novel.  When I found out that this book would be a shifter book, I was doubly excited.   I am happy to say that I was not disappointed.

Oxnard Matheson was twelve when his father walked out.  His father told Ox that he had to be a man now that he was leaving.  Without his father’s income from the garage that he worked at, Ox’s mother struggled to pay the bills.  Fortunately, the garage owner, Gordo, took Ox under his wing.  Gordo made sure that Ox and his mother held onto their house and gave Ox work in his garage even though he wasn’t of legal age.  This would continue until Ox’s sixteenth birthday, when Gordo and the guys at the garage welcomed him as an official member of their crew. On his way home, he runs into a ten year old boy.

Joe Bennett’s life has not been easy in his short ten years.  Most of his pack was slaughtered by hunters when his father (the alpha) and uncle were out looking for food.  The family moves east afterward.  Then a previous pack member kidnaps and tortures Joe to get back at Joe’s father for not protecting the pack.  Joe is rescued six weeks later but the damage is done.  The kidnapper escapes and Joe goes into a shell.  He does not speak for 18 months until he meets a young man who smells of “candy canes and pinecones and epic and awesome.”  Joe’s family is shocked and grateful that this young man, Ox, has turned Joe around after just meeting.  Much to their surprise, the young future alpha of their pack gives Ox the stone carved wolf statue after just meeting.  This is a wolf shifter’s most prized possession given at birth and usually only given to one’s mate.

The years go by and Joe’s father Thomas teaches his son the lessons needed to become the next alpha of the pack.  Thomas also sees something in Ox and starts teaching him as well, as he will be the next alpha mate.  But troubles from the past come back to haunt this small but powerful pack.  The kidnapper returns and this time sets his sights on Ox.  The pack once again must mourn the loss of some of their own.  However, will the actions of Joe to exact revenge on the kidnapper be the one thing to not only tear the pack apart but his relationship with Ox?

The characters in this book are charming, delightful and strong when need be.  Ox might not be the brightest character around, but his strong character draws people to him.  Thomas gives him the choice to become a werewolf but Ox turns it down each time saying it is not right for him at the moment.  He leads what would turn into his pack of humans at the garage when Gordo leaves with Joe.  The rest of the Bennett pack looks to him for leadership in Joe’s absence.  Joe’s exuberance over meeting his mate after suffering from PTSD from the kidnapping is cute.  You would think he was a four year old at Christmas time.  While Joe going after his kidnapper seems like a good idea to someone who has suffered at his hands, the decision will affect the rest of the pack for the next three years.  Joe’s refusal to talk to the pack is especially hard on Ox.  Once reunited though, you get the feeling that this will be a power couple in the shifter world.

The cover art by Reese Duncan is stark and perfect for this book.  The cover shows two wolf paw prints on a dark background.  It sets up the tone for the middle and latter parts of the book perfectly
