Back To Hot Summer Reads And This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Sun Reading

Hot Summer Reads

So after appropriately, my computer summer meltdown, we are back to discussing what’s hot in this summer’s reading list.  Are you a reader that haunts your favorite writer’s blog looking for any word on their upcoming releases?  Do you search out the most recent book news via their publishers or Goodreads? How do you get your book news?

I get it all those ways  and more….I follow authors on their twitter accounts, blogs, Goodreads, ravenously gobble up the upcoming new releases news that come my way via all the publishers and even the authors themselves.  New Rhys Ford, oh my!  Charlie Cochrane…woohoo!  Alex Beecroft, Amy Lane…actually I have a long, long, list.  I bet you do too.

Plus there’s plenty of  room on my lists for my author discoveries and new books that I read and fall in love with.  But back to the business at hand.  I haven’t had time to compile my summer  reading list with all the computer casualties to deal with and the new startup.  So help me out. What authors and what releases are on your list for this summer?  What are the hot summer books?  Tell me! And you just might end up with a hot summer prize!

Of Computers, Technical Difficulties, and Moving Forward. This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

computer going bad 1

Of Computers, Technical Difficulties, and Moving Forward

As  you all may have noticed (I hope you all noticed) things did not run smoothly for us last week. Yes, it was computer problems.  Mine to be specific.  It decided to die.  Slowly.  Day by day…it just refused to work at certain things.  Wheels spinning, posts taking honestly hours to get out until it finally ground to a complete halt.  Ordered a new one. Issue solved. Right? Nope.  Order messed up, as was delivery.  New one ordered…saga continued until yesterday…when after a 24 hour learning curve (mine)…we are now back and up and running,  to our reviewers and co manager’s relief and mine.

Hopefully, yours too.

So first my apologies to the authors, publishers, and promotions companies.  For all the missed deadlines on tours….we are playing catchup and they will go out asap.  Our reviews too.  Nothing I hate  worse than missed  deadlines, ditto for Barb on reviews, so here we go.

Our new look is coming…still! I promise…its just slid into July or August at this point.

Next week we continue our look at our summer reading lists and anticipated summer big or even little books.  What are you reading, what are you looking at reading….what new releases are you highly anticipating?  Let me know! Trust me I need the diversion.

And now for something old and new at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words this week.

More Thoughts on Historical and/or Western Fiction and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

What Genres Do You Think Get Overlooked?  Part II

More Thoughts on Historical/Western Fiction in LGBTQIA Genre

Real-cowboys1

Last week I started a discussion about overlooked tropes in the M/M or LGBTQIA Genre, mostly historical/or historical western fiction, both of which I love.  I had some wonderful comments, which bear repeating along with their suggestions:

Edit

An Interesting challenge. I can cite several historical westerns, but not sure I can pull off how many are HEA.
First ever read was Richard Amory’s Song of the Loon, two-spirit culture is so much more accepted so always felt it was a spoitive read.
Next came Cap Iverson’s Rattler (I haven’t read the other two in the series) and the angst of discovery is real & strong, but doesn’t deny the on-going relationship.
On a TBR list are TA Chase, Fyn Alexander, Ari McKay & Jane Elliott. They are easily tagged historical/western but not yet tagged for a HEA so time will tell.

Jordan commented with:

Just found this post because it’s a subject I’ve been looking for in historical westerns! Although it is YA, and not romance, the Lightfall series has a gay relationship between two cowboys as a main story/character element throughout the series. It’s historical fantasy set in 1879 New Mexico Territory.
https://www.goodreads.com/series/143126

I’d recommend Michael Jensen’s novels for anyone interested in the subject as well—though not necessarily if you’re after HEA.

Lucius Parhelion is one of the first names that pop into my head when someone asks for a recommendation for m/m historical fiction about the American West.  Parhelion’s stories are told with an authentic, dry tone that seems to come up  from the very soil and arid climate of the land the characters ride over and exist on.  The author’s stories are factual, full of information and dates that locate the story in a specific time and place.  But these details always serve to enhance rather than obfuscate or weigh down the discourse.  Check out his Masked Rider and other free works posted here.

What other recommendations?  Well  The Celestial by Barry Brennessel and several stories by  Sarah Black, an author I talked about a week ago.  There’s another wonderful author rumbling about in my brain but I can’t seem to pull it out of my Kindle so his/her stories go back further than that.  More research is needed obviously.

What does this all tell you?  That these stories are scarce and the ones that are written beautifully, that stick in your hearts and minds, are even more hard to find.  If you have more recommendations, please send them on, I’m always looking for more.

Elin, if you’ve finished that story and liked it, let us know….

Let’s keep the conversation open.  What other overlooked or underused tropes are you missing in our fiction?  Why do you think that’s happened?  Share your thoughts with us….

Author ReDiscoveries and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Author ReDiscoveries and This Week At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

✍✍✍✍✍✍

Its a week of reviews and one Author Rediscovery as I look back on a author I dearly love whose books deserve a second and perhaps even a third look by readers  everywhere.

Surely we all have authors like those.  Writers whose books we’ve read and we’ve wondered why they just haven’t caught on  for some reason.  We’ve adored their prose, their characters, the way the plot just came together and caught our hearts and minds.  And then looked around to see that maybe no one else was reading along with us.

So I thought why not start a column to bring back some of the authors that we felt that way about or books we want to highlight once more.

This week I’m going to highlight a favorite author of mine, Sara Black and her books.  To me, her style, her wounded soldiers and yes, even her mysticism, just stood out and left me marveling long after her stories were over.  More about her later on in the week.

What authors or books make you feel that way?  Write us and let us know….

Now on to this week’s schedule…

Old Labels, Tagging and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Old Labels, Tagging and The Need to Move Forward

Something one of our reviewers said  to me this week got me thinking about labels and tagging.  She said that there was a controversy stirring about a current release and the GFY label and bisexuality, blurring/confusion between them.  She wanted to give me a head’s up.  Now I had no idea (still don’t) because I wasn’t paying any attention but it brought to mind things that have been swimming around the brain for some time now…that there are some labels that need to be put to rest.

In the book review world there are certain three letter  or  three character abbreviations we use all the time to quick label  a book.  Among some of the most widely used are M/M, D/s, HEA, HFN, and of course, GFY.   Its the later that I’m going to be blogging about on Saturday.  I think we’ve grown past that label, and now its rolled into hurtful territory.   Why not use the term pansexual (among others) where proper?  And bisexual where the character clearly loves and desires both sexes?

Not getting into it today but look for a much longer and thoughtful post on Saturday.  Join in on the discussion and let me know how you feel about tagging and labels.  I’m really curious.  Haven’t be gone past these old perceptions?  Isn’t it time we laid them to rest?  We’ve enlarged the LGBT to include LGBTQIA, lets bring the book review world along with it.

Now we’ve got a stacked  week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words, lets get to it.
