More First Lines of Novels,  Plus Our First Line M/M  Novels Quiz!

People tend to disagree over what are the most favorite/best loved lines in literature, especially when compiling lists.  When scanning over a number of the Top Ten, the same lines and books appear over and over, but after that? It can get lively.

Sometimes the lists can surprise you, baffle you and delight you.  Here are some of the first lines I found on lists that dismayed, baffled and delighted the heck out of me, and yes, that one huge thing is one sentence.  Read it and weep for whatever emotion takes you and consider if they did their job…made you want to read the book.

What line dismayed me?   This first line found on multiple lists, which I still find dismal. Up to me, this book would have remained unread, even by that year’s standards.

“I was born in the Year 1632, in the City of York, of a good Family, tho’ not of that Country, my Father being a Foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull; He got a good Estate by Merchandise, and leaving off his Trade, lived afterward at York, from whence he had married my Mother, whose Relations were named Robinson, a very good Family in that Country, and from whom I was called Robinson Kreutznaer; but by the usual Corruption of Words in England, we are now called, nay we call our selves, and write our Name Crusoe, and so my Companions always call’d me.” Robinson Crusoe (1719), Daniel Defoe

What baffled me? This one sentence, yes, one line opener.

“Once upon a time two or three weeks ago, a rather stubborn and determined middle-aged man decided to record for posterity, exactly as it happened, word by word and step by step, the story of another man for indeed what is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal, a somewhat paranoiac fellow unmarried, unattached, and quite irresponsible, who had decided to lock himself in a room a furnished room with a private bath, cooking facilities, a bed, a table, and at least one chair, in New York City, for a year 365 days to be precise, to write the story of another person—a shy young man about of 19 years old—who, after the war the Second World War, had come to America the land of opportunities from France under the sponsorship of his uncle—a journalist, fluent in five languages—who himself had come to America from Europe Poland it seems, though this was not clearly established sometime during the war after a series of rather gruesome adventures, and who, at the end of the war, wrote to the father his cousin by marriage of the young man whom he considered as a nephew, curious to know if he the father and his family had survived the German occupation, and indeed was deeply saddened to learn, in a letter from the young man—a long and touching letter written in English, not by the young man, however, who did not know a damn word of English, but by a good friend of his who had studied English in school—that his parents both his father and mother and his two sisters one older and the other younger than he had been deported they were Jewish to a German concentration camp Auschwitz probably and never returned, no doubt having been exterminated deliberately X * X * X * X, and that, therefore, the young man who was now an orphan, a displaced person, who, during the war, had managed to escape deportation by working very hard on a farm in Southern France, would be happy and grateful to be given the opportunity to come to America that great country he had heard so much about and yet knew so little about to start a new life, possibly go to school, learn a trade, and become a good, loyal citizen.”  — Raymond Federman, Double or Nothing, 1971

What delighted me? That I found these opening lines on a couple of lists.

“Where’s Papa going with that axe?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast. (E.B. White,Charlotte’s Web)

“When the car stopped rolling, Parker kicked out the windshield and crawled through onto the wrinkled hood, Glock first.” –Donald E. Westlake writing as Richard Stark, Backflash

The drought had lasted now for ten million years, and the reign of the terrible lizards had long since ended. –Arthur C. Clarke, 2001: A Space Odyssey

“Nobody ever walked across the bridge, not on a night like this.” –Mickey Spillane, One Lonely Night.

This little hunt so entertained me that I decided to compile a list of my own, with help from the rest of the reviewers here at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.

We started to look for the first lines from some very popular M/M Romance/Fiction stories and we came up with what is sure to be the first of at least 3  Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words M/M Romance First Line Quizzes!

Look for the answers in next week’s Sunday’s post . How many, if any,do you think you will recognize?

Announcement clip artLast week I was happy to introduce Free Dreamer as our latest reviewer to the Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words blog.  Now I get to announce that Wynter aka Lavender Wynter to our merry group of readers and reviewers.

BioIcon3

From Wynter…

“This marks the beginning of another adventure for me, which is surprising to say the least. I thought I would be well worn out of them by now if one was to know my history. Yet, as I come across Melanie’s call for reviewers, there’s a restless soul in my head that likes to say, “This sounds interesting. Let’s do this. It’ll be fun!”

She likes adventure. So, here I am.

I’m originally from a little island in east Asia, moved to and lived in southeast Asia for 10 years before starting and finishing college in the United States. I write as much as I can in my free time and reading is the only food source I can’t live without. I’m a lover of fantasy and prefer serial fiction (multi-volume stories).

The only genre I stay away from is horror. I’m rather picky and choosy about science fiction.

I’ll like to bid all of you a wonderful and blessed day. I look forward to working with the wonderful people here, and my thanks to Melanie for letting me join the community. It is a pleasure to meet you all.”

What a great month!  First F. D. and now Wynter!  Woot!  What I hope this means for you is that Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words will be able to bring to readers is an even wider spectrum of  perspectives (and perhaps new authors and books).  I can’t wait to find out.  falls leaves 2

Thoughts of Books and August and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

month-of-august-clipart-4

August, summer reading, and books has always been associated together in my mind, especially growing up.  August was the month of reading lists, it was the last days of getting away for a vacation, of those summer “big books” you lugged to the beach in tote bags full of soda, sunscreen and beach towels.  August was the month for your last chance of a vacation romance and stories to stock up on to tell you friends in September.  August was hot, lazy yet full of a kind of desperation to pack in as much fun as you can for fall and September was calling. Some read, some boogied the nights away, some did both. And most of us can remember those blockbuster books we poured over in the sands and porches that marked the passing of summer.

In my  mind, that sandy stack of books used to be all about the “winding  down”.  Now my book stack is mostly electronic and August is all  about the “winding up”. Sort of refreshing change of perspective if you ask me…ah age!

August has  arrived and with it comes an outpouring of awaited books in series you love, new books by authors you adore and debut novels by  authors who soon may claim a place on your auto buy list.  I am reviewing one such book this week, that would be Eden Winter’s Redemption (a Bo and Lucky story).   Stella’s got another Nick Wilgus’ book for you all, one that’s claimed her heart as has the author.  Mika and Stella both feel that way about J. H. Knight…so check out their Double Dipping reviews of Breakthrough.  Jeri’s reviews start in this week. Check out what her thoughts are of RJ Scott’s Undercover Lover and Double Cross by Shannon West.  Aurora is back with our YA Saturday with a Lissa Kasey novel.  I love her world building in her  adult M/M fiction, check out what Aurora finds with Kasey’s YA stories.

What’s coming soon?  Mary Calmes has a new Jory and Sam story, Piece of Cake,  to be released from Dreamspinner Press, Heidi Cullinan has “Winter Wonderland“, John Inman is releasing another in his  marvelous Belladonna Arms series “Coming Home’, and the Pulp Friction gang continues to ride that supernatural pony  of interconnected stories into wild going ons and deathly doings!  Next up?  The last of the 3rd round stories, Diamond Edge by Laura Harner.  And so much more.  What stories are you looking forward to?

An Aurora YA Review: Noble Falling (The Halvarian Ruin Books #1) by Sara Gaines

Rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Noble Falling coverDuchess Aleana Melora of Eniva, future queen of Halvaria, is resigned to the gilded cage of her life, facing a loveless marriage to Tallak, the prospective king, and struggling under the pressure to carry on the family name despite her wish to find a woman to love.

When her convoy is attacked on the journey to Tallak’s palace, Aleana is saved by her guard, Ori, only to discover her people have turned against her and joined forces with the kingdom of Dakmor, Halvaria’s greatest enemy. Her only hope is to reach Tallak, but she and Ori don’t make it far before another attack and an unlikely rescue by Kahira, a Dakmoran woman banished from her kingdom for reasons she is hesitant to share.

Though Kahira is marked as a criminal, Aleana’s heart makes itself known. Aleana is facing danger and betrayal at every turn, and she fears giving in to her desires will mean she will enter her marriage knowing exactly the kind of passion she will never have as the Halvarian Queen—if she survives long enough to be crowned.

Noble Falling (The Halvarian Ruin Books #1) by Sara Gaines was very good, but I can’t help thinking that I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the books in order. Now, that’s no fault of the author, but, to anyone who’s thinking about reading Noble Falling or Noble Persuasion, I would really recommend to read the books in order so that you can appreciate the plot and not know the direction of the story when you read Noble Falling.

So, I read the books in the wrong order, but even with that being said, the whole of the series’ plot was very enjoyable and I had a good time reading both of the books. I would say that I enjoyed both the books about equally, and there were some moments that, simply because I’d already read the sequel, I found to be a little too much of an explanation. But it never drew me out of the story, and I enjoyed the characters in this book as much as I did when I read the sequel.

On its own, the book is an enjoyable read and I would definitely recommend that you at least give this book a chance of you like fantasy. I would bet that if you do you’ll look forward to reading the sequel. The series is definitely solid and it’s a fun read with interesting characters who grow throughout the books in a way that’s enjoyable for a reader to observe.

The cover artist for this book is Paul Richmond. Like the cover for the second book in the series, this cover is also very simple, but it’s still visually appealing. There’s a very clear tie between the first book and the second through the covers and it’s easy for a reader to connect the two when they’re looking at reading the series.

Call for LGBTQIA YA Reviewers!

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words blog Badge

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is Looking For LGBTQIA YA or New Adult Reviewers!

Are you of YA or New Adult age?  Do you love to read books and write?  Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words would love to have you come write for us as a reviewer.  We get offered more books than we have reviewers to read them, and that’s especially true in the YA and New Adult category.  Aurora our YA Reviewer, as you all may be aware,  is writing books of her own as well as reading and reviewing for us.  Plus there’s that little thing called life and school work to think of.  So Aurora’s plenty busy these days.  And we would like to be able to expand our YA Saturdays.

Why have a YA or New Adult age reviewer?  Because that’s the age group these  books are written for.  Certainly, many of us “older folk” appreciate and love YA and New Adult stories but we are reading them from an entirely different perspective, one less fresh and more experienced.   When I read a review that says that a YA book reads too young, I want to hit my head on the  desk.  Oh the irony.

I want a reviewer who will say “yes, this reads like my age group”, or  “yes, our conversations sound like that”.  Or the opposite.  Whatever is true.

What happens if you want to review for us?  Well, first of all you need a parent or guardian’s consent (under the age of 18).  If that goes through, then we talk format (so easy, you can look at one of Aurora’s reviews), and then I will send you a list of YA or New Adult books to choose from.  And we will take it from there.

I’m not expecting pages but a few paragraphs.  Nor do I expect you to turn them out every week,   We can agree on how many a month (even 1) according to your schedule at home and school.  I want this to be a fun experience, a way to share stories or  books you love and why you love them.

Sound like something you would like to do? Know someone who might? Contact me at Melaniem54@msn.com and let’s talk!  You can  find out more about us at the home page reviewer section.

Happy Reading!

Hi everyone!

So as many of you know I’ve been working for a really long time to finish, submit, edit and make into being my young adult novel, Beneath the Scales. It has been a labor of love every step of the way and I am so proud and so excited to be sharing it with everybody now.

The cover art was done by the lovely Anne Cain, who I’ve always been a huge fan of and was extremely lucky to get as my cover artist. And the book is now on the coming soon page at my publisher, Harmony Ink! What that means is that you can pre-order it, you can go and check out the blurb, see what it’s about and whether you’re interested, and see the cover art on the official site.

Thank you all so much and I’m so, so excited for this! Check out the book below and that great cover!

Stealing and working shady jobs might feed them, but it doesn’t bring in enough for the arcane books and training she sorely needs, and he knows he can’t keep it up forever. His reputation as a troublemaker is starting to put him in danger.

When Elsaben is carried off by a dragon who attacks their village and burns it to the ground, Martus swears revenge, expecting to either die or return a hero. He isn’t prepared for what he discovers in a cave in the mountains.

If he can put aside his prejudices, he might find a chance for a better life, a faithful new friend, and the opportunity to help someone more like himself than he realizes. His adventure could change everything—even the beliefs he’s always taken for granted.

Martus ran a hand lazily through his hair, then trailed his palm down to rub at his eyes, and finally let his arm flop down onto the bed beside him. It was light out already and he had to get up, much as he didn’t want to, but he was going to postpone waking fully as long as possible, just as he did every morning.

As a boy who had been punched in the stomach many times before, it was easy to recognize the feeling, but, through the crack of his eye—rather than the angry ex-lover of someone he’d pulled into his bed the night before, as he would usually see—his curly-haired little sister was visible.

“Mar! Up, up, up! You promised you’d take me with you today! ‘Member?” Bright eyes peered down into his, and Martus easily threw an arm around the small girl and pulled her off his stomach, mindful of her head when he plopped her down on the wood floor beside him.

“Yes, Elsaben. Sh.” Pulling a pillow over his face for a moment, Martus heaved a loud sigh, then tossed the pillow to the side and sat up. “Wh—” A yawn cut his question off, and his eyes wrinkled shut for a moment. “Where d’you want to go, darling?”

“I want to go wherever you go, Mar! “ Elsaben grinned, flopping on her stomach to grope under his bed before standing triumphantly with a bent up stick in her small hand, “You have my sa-word!” Martus couldn’t help laughing at that, ruffling his little sister’s hair and standing up.

“All right, then, little warrior, get dressed.” As he spoke, Martus tugged on his shirt and went looking for his day pants. The siblings didn’t have much since their parents died, but Martus always made sure his little sister had the basic necessities—clothes, food, water, something that could at least pass for a house—and a little more when he could manage it.

“Bet I’ll be ready quicker than you!” With that, Elsaben was out the door and hurrying down the stairs, hair flying out behind her.

Aurora Peppermint on Beneath The Scales and YA  Stories

Writing Beneath the Scales was a huge labor of love for me. I came up with the character of Martus first, and Hal very soon after that. I really love their characters and throughout this book and the books that will follow it, I’ve just had such a great time seeing them grow and slowly become more comfortable with each other. I love to read young adult fiction, and I have found that I love writing it just as much. Working with teenage characters is so interesting because that time in a person’s life is so unique and, in the case of Beneath the Scales, the situation that Martus and Hal have found themselves in just makes an already complicated time even more so. Martus is in the position of being a guardian to his sister, stealing and doing unsavory jobs just to keep them from starving. And through the course of this book, his life just gets more complicated than before. From the things he learns about himself to the things he learns about the world around him, he really has a chance to change and improve his quality of life.

Besides just my characters, who had my heart from the moment that I came up with them, the plot of this book is really important to me too. So often, I find myself reading young adult books and absolutely loving them, but wondering how the fantasy world in the books I enjoy can connect to the real world. At the same time, I see teenagers, friends, struggling with their sexual and romantic identities, and struggling with being accepted for a whole host of other reasons. What I really wanted to show in this books was that everyone goes through these struggles, and it’s very possible to recover from them and it’s possible to still do great things for the world even if the world doesn’t have faith in you. I also wanted to show someone who both deals with prejudices being put against him, for a few reasons – his social status, his sexuality – but someone who is still prejudiced in his own ways. More importantly, I wanted show someone who was trying to overcome that prejudice.

I had a great time writing this book, I love the characters very much, and I am so excited to see where they go in the future and to share their upcoming journeys, and the journey they go through in this book, with you.

So last Sunday I posted the need for LGBT YA books for the Prince William PFLAG library and the books started to arrive.  The response has been wonderful.  And the books and the donor’s large hearts so deeply appreciated.  There is nothing better than giving the gift of a book!  One book can make such a huge difference.  It can show you new worlds, give hope and encouragement, let you know that you aren’t alone in feelings or identity, or just take you away for just a moment from the pressing issues and stress that you might be facing.

PFLAG

Opening a book to me is similar to opening a TARDIS (yep, flying the Geek flag here).  The contents inside are so much bigger, surprising, endlessly fascinating and stimulating….an interior not guessed by the cover on the outside.  Why?  Because its also what we bring to it that can’t be quantified or known.  Who we are and what we bring to the books we read and what we take away from them.   From the comfort of Winnie the Pooh to the joy and pain of self discovery of C Kennedy’s Slaying Isidore’s Dragons, the gift of a book is often immeasurable.   Let’s keep them flowing.  Here is the link again to Lynn Schmitz, Prince William PFLAG facilitator and head of the donations to the  PFLAG YA Library.

We also added a new feature on Author Discoveries.  Reviewer BJ started it off with her discovery of author Jaye McKenna and BJ will be reviewing several of her books this week and next.  What new authors have you discovered?  Write us, tell us about their books and let us add them to our list of New Authors to read!
